Study Recommends Strategies for Control Salt

Almost one in three adults has high blood pressure, known as hypertension. That’s according to a study by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) commissioned. The study recommends that the CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) give priority to strategies that reach large numbers of people and strengthen monitoring and prevention efforts for hypertension. In a former life, I was a dental hygienist. One day I had a 10-year old child as a patient. When the child opened her mouth, I realized there was a very good chance she had scarlet fever. I won’t gross you out with a description of what gave me the clue, but her mother confirmed my guess days later. It is not unusual for the first signs of a medical condition to show up in your mouth. A report in the February 2010 issue of the Health Affairs journal shows a positive ROI on employer-sponsored wellness programs. In the report, Workplace Wellness Programs Can Generate Savings, Harvard University researchers analyzed costs and savings on wellness programs offered by large employers.
